We are hiring a Packaging Engineer to join our Supply Chain team in Dongguan, China. This position reports to the Director of Quality Assurance and takes Away further by developing and optimizing packaging solutions that meet our ecommerce, retail, and wholesale needs. The ideal candidate will have a strong understanding of packaging materials, and the ability to balance quality, cost-efficiency, and sustainability.
What You'll Do As The Packaging Engineer
- You'll engineer protective packaging to ensure every Away product arrives to a customer looking like new, with no scuffs or other damage.
- You'll build SOP's and procedures for factories, 3rd Party Logistics centers, and required standard and special testing.
- You'll collaborate with suppliers and vendors to source materials and manage costs effectively. This will include preparing cost analyses and optimizing designs to balance quality with cost-efficiency, supporting budgetary goals. This will include fit testing and prototype reviews.
- You'll manage the packaging database (in Airtable) for materials, physical properties, and maintain clear record keeping for general reporting & EPR compliance. This includes packaging traceability & Lifecycle management for rolling changes.
- You'll partner closely with product development, quality, sourcing, and factory teams to understand packaging needs and deliver solutions that align with production schedules and customer requirements.
- You'll support the Packaging Manager in ongoing projects and contribute ideas to enhance packaging processes.
- You'll oversee initial production runs of new packaging to ensure smooth implementation. Performing on-site packaging quality checks and audits at factories before shipments.
- You'll investigate root causes of packaging damage reported from the US or customers, directly at the source.
- You'll oversee and conduct routine packaging performance testing at factories or labs. You will be responsible for ensuring test procedures are followed correctly.
- You'll ensure correct implementation of packaging changes on the ground and train factory staff on new packaging procedures/ quality standards.
Who You Are
- You have a minimum of 2 years of experience in packaging engineering, ideally with exposure to product development and testing.
- You excel at analyzing data related to costs, materials, and logistics to optimize packaging solutions.
- You are highly organized and a great communicator, and are able to communicate frequent and numerous packaging changes in a simple, clear, and organized manner to suppliers and internal partners.
- You have experience with packaging testing including burst, tumble, and vibration. Bonus if you have qualified for various wholesalers.
- You have a strong attention to detail to ensure quality standards are met and can design within the development timeline.
- You're proficient in Adobe Illustrator, Airtable, and Google tools.
- You are a creative problem solver and come up with innovative solutions.
- You're able to travel within China and SE Asia (up to 30% of the time).
- You're creative and innovative; you love to build great new things that are fresh and unique while staying on brand.
- You're agile, and motivated by a fast-paced and ever changing environment.

What We Offer

Our compensation is purposely structured as one rate to provide transparency in the hiring process while honoring our internal pay bands. Salary and benefit offerings are reviewed during phone screenings to ensure alignment.
- Compensation: ¥290,340 - ¥322,600
